Becoming a Frugal Momma: Fitness on a Dime

Alright y’all. This Oilfield Wife is on a diet. Well, I won’t say diet. I’ve learned that diet is an evil word. One that actually scares me.

What I am really doing is trying to get back to the healthy lifestyle that I had settled into before my second pregnancy. Before Justin was born last November, I made a vow to myself that I would get back to my pre-pregnancy weight before he was a year old. Well, he turns one in exactly 3 months and the scale hasn’t moved. I’ve always had a knack for waiting until the last minute, but this is ridiculous.

We all know that establishing exercise regimen is very important when on a weight loss journey. For me, one of the biggest obstacles in that area is money. Seeing Rebecca’s post on Insanity and working out made me think of all the times I’ve wanted to try that program but wasn’t able to because of the price. Well, that and the fact that I shelled out the money for P90X, only to have it sit by the TV and collect dust. I also can’t justify the cost of a gym membership in our budget. All of these things aside, the only thing stopping me from losing weight is myself, not my budget.

Being the frugal momma that I am, I have found that the internet is my best friend in finding cheap or free exercise resources and apps.

Fitsugar.com- Like most cool stuff, I found this little gem while surfing on Pinterest. Fitsugar is a fitness website by Popsugar, which is a life and style site. There are a lot of videos and articles that are extremely helpful. My favorites are the ten minute videos like yoga and pilates. Being so busy, these are the perfect way to get in quick (and FREE) workout.

Bodyrock.tv- There are a lot of workout videos here as well. I haven’t fully checked out the site, so I can’t give my personal opinion on it, but I have heard good things from other people.

MyFittnessPal- When it isn’t have one of it’s many glitches, I love MFP. This calorie counter can be used on-line or on your mobile device. My favorite parts are the barcode scanner and the extensive database of food. The hardest part? Getting into the habit of logging all meals and snacks. After a week or so, it becomes like second nature! (Do you use MFP? Add me as a friend!)

Lose It!- Lose It! is similar to MFP. I tried using Lose It for a week or so but went back to MFP. I have heard rave reviews from others, so it really is just finding which one works for you.

Rip Deck- I’m actually pretty sad that Rip Deck is only available on the iPhone, iPod, and iPad. I loved the app when I had an iPhone and fervently hope that they roll out an Android version soon. At $1.99, this app is worth the money and will definitely put you through a great workout using only one piece of equipment: Yourself.

If you’ve learned nothing else from this post, I hope you have learned that a tight budget is NOT a reason to avoid getting fit.
